Erris United Football Cub

Iorras Aontaithe dropped three needed points away to Westport United in the Super league on the evening of the 25th June, final score: Iorras 1 Westport 3.

Iorras were 1-0 down going in at the break. But shortly into the second half, John Cafferkey levelled the score with an excellent free kick. But unfortunately Iorras conceded two more, the last one was from a corner, just before full time. Iorras goal keeper, Ivan Barrett was excellent, despite  the final score line.

Iorras Aontaithe (B) were up against Castlebar Celtic (B) on Thursday evening the 23rd in a rescheduled League fixture,, the final score Iorras (B) 1 Celtic (B) 2.

Erris began well with better football from their last outing. They had lots of possession but were finding it hard make use of it, and on 32 minutes, totally against the run of play, the visitors took the lead when Terry Maughan slotted the ball past Harry Reilly. Castlebar Celtic (B) could have made it 2-0 two minutes later, but the effort clipped the cross bar. It remained 1-0 at the break. In the second half Erris (B) continued to press the opposition and on 64 minutes the grand old young man, Gareth O’Malley had Iorras back level with a neat finish. Erris (B)  continued to push forward for the lead goal with efforts from Vinnie McGrath, Paul Barrett, Tom Duffy and Jason Boylan.

But on 74 minutes Terry Maughan scored his second goal after some sloppy defending by Iorras. The home side pushed forward in the closing minutes, even Harry Reilly, the Erris keeper got in on the efforts to be replace by Paul Reilly in goal, but it wasn’t enough and the visitors had done enough to secure all three points.

 

 

Iorras Aontaithe breezed past Super League rivals, Swinford in round two of the Connaught Gold cup at Carne Nash Park on Sunday 19th June, final score Erris United 4 Swinford 0.

The home side started the brighter with Micky Togher, Mark Gilbert and Anthony Mills probing the visitors.

 

But in the 14th minute, Brendan Nallen had Erris in front with a unchallenged effort just out side the area. But Swinford could have levelled on 32 minutes, but Alan Carter’s effort rattled the cross bar.

 

Then on 39 minutes, Jonathan Donoghue made it 2-0 just before the break, with an excellent finish from a tight angle from the left, side almost on the end-line, squeezing it in between the Keeper and the post. In the second half Swinford pushed forward with Chris Reddington, Richey Dalton, Trevor McDonald, and Alan Carter trying to pull one back.

 

Then, Erris assistant Manager, Martin McIntyre made some changes which injected more pace in to the Iorras attack and on 77 minutes substitute, Eamon McAndrew scored, goal number three.

 

Ten minutes later Eamon McAndrew scored his second to make it 4-0 . The final score could have been greater, given the number of chances Iorras had in the closing minutes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Iorras Aontaithe (B) were at home, this evening the 18th June, in the first round of the Connaught Gold Cup to Urlaur United, final score Iorras 2 Urlaur 0.

The home side scored, each side of the half, Roland McIntyre on 11 minutes and Vinnie McGrath on 62 minutes from a neat cross from Eric O’Reilly.The visitors for their part, had lots of chances to put a score on the board at various moments in the game but they failed to capitalise on poor defending by Iorras, at times.

Ipswich Town F.C. and Republic of Ireland U21, Ronan Murray took time out from his summer holidays recently to call in on  his old club, to give a few pointers to the very young members of Iorras Aontaithe.

Des O’Connor and Martin McIntyre were giving their weekly coaching sessions and everyone was delighted when Ronan dropped in.

 

Ronan is back at Ipswich Town where he has secured another contract after his loan spell at Torquay. Des and Martin coached Ronan when he arrived at the club, all those years ago.

 

Iorras Aontaithe U13 recorded a 2-3 win away to near neighbours, Achill Rovers in the third round of the Mayo Youth cup on Tuesday 14th June. Manager, Vinnie McGrath was ably assisted by the Club Chairman who was standing in for Paul who is on his holidays with his Family in France. In the opening half Iorras were all at sea and were 2-0 down after 20 minute.

But just before half time Darren Lennon pulled a goal back with a delightful cross from the right hand end line, that deceived everyone ending up in the back of the net. In the second half Iorras were a different outfit, and with a number of changes, imposed themsleves more on the home side. The second goal came ten minutes into the half with Darren Lennon scoring his second, with a carbon copy of his first goal. Iorras continued to push forward, taking the game to the opposition, with the third goal coming 12 minutes before full time. Substitute, Luke O’Reilly was the provider with his inventive play on the left wing providing a good cross to the waiting, Darren Murray, heading the ball home at the far post, great effort. Achill Rovers pushed forward in the final minutes for an equaliser, but good defending by Iorras cancelled their efforts. Iorras Aontaithe are now in the last 16 of this competition. This was a very good second half performance with imposing play and inventiveness in the final third.  It started to rain not long into the cup clash, which was predicted by the Chairman to Vinnie and Derek, the bus driver- the hills were near, a sure sign of rain. Table toppers, Castlebar Celtic were the visitors to Carne Nash Park this afternoon, Sunday the 12th June and they lift with three points, a game in which, if Iorras had made more of their opportunities to score, the result may have been different.

The visitors started bright with Stephen Gavin, Terence Cogrill and Alan McDonnell probing the Iorras defence in the opening half. Erris, for that matter, had their chances with Anthony Paddan, Anthony Mills and Mark Gilbert, the best of these on 33 minutes when Mark rounded the keeper, but just at the last moment lost his footing. But one minute before half time Iorras went in front when Mark Gilbert provided a nicely waited pass, for Jonathan Donahue to score from close range.

In the second half, Castlebar Celtic were back level on 54 minutes when Jamie Fallen got inside the Iorras defence to score from the edge of the area.

Then on 61 minutes James Minogue was gifted a free header from a corner, to put Celtic in front. Iorras then brought on Pat Barrett, Eamon McAndrew and Paul Barrett, to freshen things up. Erris continued in search of the equalizer but to know avail. The final score was: Iorras Aontaithe 1 Castlebar Celtic 2.

 

 

 

Micky Togher had a very good game, getting his head to most of what went the home sides way.

The Club awards for the 2010 season were handed out on Saturday evening the 11th June in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel. The awards were Sponsored by McNulty Coaches, Belmullet.

The Club Chairman welcomed everyone and thanked John and Anna McNulty for their continuing support for the Club. He Congratulated all the award winners.

U13 Pete MacArthur. U14 Eoin O’Donoghue. U15 Tommy Conroy,Kyle O’Reilly, Gary Boylan, Ryan Ruddy, Cathal Barrett. U16 Paul Barrett. U18 Jason Boylan. The Masters was Eric O’Reilly. It was a games of two half’s as Iorras Aontaithe (B) lost out to Bangor Hib’s in the semi-final of the Touhy Cup, with the final score, Iorras (B) 2 Bangor Hib’s 3.

The home side were 2-0 in front going in at the break thanks to Jason Boylan on 15 minutes and 41 minutes. But shortly into the second half the visitors started the come back with a Brian McHale penalty on 56 minutes. Then on 71 minutes Darren McManamon levelled the score for Bangor Hib’s from a Andy Lavelle pass. But on 76 minutes Bangor were awarded a free about 30 yards out on the left and Brian McHale’s kick found Cormac Murphy who slotted home to give the visitors the lead and a place in the Cup final. Iorras (B) can blame their poor defending and lack of conviction (along with a questionable penalty decision) in the second half for their defeat.
