Erris United Football Cub

With the even age groups starting in the next couple weeks, Iorras u13, u15,  and  u17  leagues come to a end, the u13 finished second in their league and are playing Bangor in the last 16 of u13 cup this Tuesday evening the 3rd, KO 7pm in Bangor. Our u15s finished in mid table of their league and lost out in quarter finals of the u15 Mayo cup, our u17 finished fourth in their league and are through to the semi finals of the Mayo u17 cup,well done to all involved.

Iorras Aontaithe/Erris United held its annual National School Comórtas in warm glorious sunshine at Carne Nash on Wednesday 6th June. Thirteen Schools in all competed for the Shield and Plate finals. The Comórtas is Sponsored by O’Donoghues Bakery/An Builín Blasta, this is the 5th anniversary of the event.  Like previous years, the football was very good with some very good individual displays. The Club thanks the Sponsors for their continuing support and encouragement, also, to all the Children, Teachers and minders from all the Schools who enjoy the occasion every year.

 

A big thank you to the Club members/Officers/Committee for making sure the day ran smoothly, especially to Des O’Connor, the event coordinator and  Mary Treasa Barrett for organising the refreshments.

 

 

Binghamstown beat Aughleam 1-0 in the final of the Shield and Carrowteigue beat Pullathomas in a sudden death penalty shot-out after the game ended 1-1.

Iorras Aontaithe (B) continued the very positive weekend when they also picked up their first three points of the season at home to Mulranny United on Sunday 3rd June, final score, Iorras (B) 2 Mulranny 1. Eric O’Reilly was the hero of the day  with two goals all coming in the second half, one from play and the other a penalty. (The first half ended nil nil.) Well done to all on a good weekend of football.

 

Iorras Aontaithe recorded a very positive second  half performance at home to S & F  United on a rain soaked Saturday evening the 2nd June to seal  their first three points of the new super league season, final score, Iorras Aontaithe 4 S.& F. United 1.

Iorras were in front on 28 minutes when Mark Gilbert was foiled in the area and Player-Manager, David Reilly slotted home the resulting penalty. Mark Gilbert could have made it 2-nil on 42 minutes but his header hit the cross bar. But just before the break, indecisive defending by Erris gifted the visitors a free kick just on the edge of the area and Paul Moran scored. Shortly into the second half, Mark Gilbert popped up to give Iorras the lead, heading home a in swinging cross from the inform, Gareth O’Malley.  Erris then introduced the very versatile, Sean Gaughan on 63 minutes, which gave Erris a new edge and on 69 minutes player Manager, Brendan Nallen scored with a very individual effort, with lots of power and pace.  Then on 78 minutes the rock steady influence of Henry Gaughan was introduced in defence. The goal post denied Mark Gilbert on 86 minutes, but two minutes later Brendan Nallen scored his scored goal, much in the same vein as his first to leave the final score 4-1. This was very good second half display from Erris with some very good individual performances and well done to all. Or should that be – the long lonely summer. The quest for those first three points of the season continues for Iorras Aontaithe (B) after their home defeat to Moyvilla on Thursday evening the 24th, final score Iorras (B) 2 Moyvilla 6.

You may recall that this fixture was abandoned from a couple of days previous due to a very light breeze – a draft in other words.  The first half ended 2-2 with Gareth O’Malley scoring both goals for Iorras. In the second half Moyvilla put the game beyond the home side with four further goals before referee, Barry Blake brought the proceedings to an end in the warm evening sun with the playful lambs dancing the pastures,  flowers waving in the breeze and the sound of the waves lapping on shoreline.

The Connaught Gold cup holders, Iorras Aontaithe were knocked out in the first round one of the competition by Premier Division (A) side, Ballyheane at Carne Nash Park this afternoon the 20th May, final score Iorras 0 Ballyheane 1.

A third minute goal by Peter Sheridan gave the visitors a surprise victory over a depleted Erris side, but Ballyheane were the more determined outfit on the day, in defending their one goal advantage, especially in the second half when efforts from Henry Gaughan, Brendan Nallen, Ivan Barrett and Marl Gilbert were blocked.

Iorras (B) also suffered defeat away to Fahy Rovers going down 4-2.

Iorras Aontaithe (B) side are at home on Thursday evening the 31st May against Moyvilla, in a rescheduled league fixture.

 

There was brisk trade in the Marts this week with young Calf’s, young Heifers, Bullocks and matchen dry Cows going well. In the sheep trade, black face maintain horny Rams and Ewes were making good prize also.

Meanwhile, a late equaliser by Castlebar Celtic denied Iorras Aontaithe their first three points of season at Carne Nash Park in a very tough hot-tempered Super league encounter, final score, Erris United 3 Castlebar Celtic 3.

Iorras were two nil down shortly into the opening half with goals from Ronan O Boyle and Ger O’ Boyle. But Erris Player-Manager, Brendan Nallen scored twice to leave the sides going in at half time 2-2. When play resumed, and halfway through the  half, Sean Gaughan was foiled in the area and Henry Gaughan was on hand to slot home the resulting penalty.As the clock was ticking down, Nigel Naughton grabbed a late equaliser for the visitors to deny Erris all three points.

The Iorras Aontaithe/Erris United club awards for the 2011 season took place in Clann Lir Bar on Friday night the 11th May. Des O’Connor was the Master of ceremony’s.

On bank holiday Monday 7th May members of Bangor Hib’s, Kilmore United and Iorras Aontaithe plus Padraig McHale, Chairman of the Mayo League participated in the John Giles Foundation Walk of Dreams. The walkers set off from the Broadhaven Bay Hotel in Belmullet and thanks to everyone for making the effort to participate and to the sponsors.

The John Giles Foundation funds community projects and drives fundraising initiatives that help football clubs, Schools, and Community groups to raise funds for themselves for other worthwhile local projects.

Iorras Aontaithe recorded a 2-1 victory over Castlebar Celtic in the quarter final of the Divisional cup (FCS Cup) at a Very windy Carne Nash Park on Friday evening the 4th May.

The game was played in bright sunshine, but a very cold wind was blowing from the North West with gusts of 4 to 7 with heavy swells. Iorras went in front on 15 minute when Mark Gilbert was foiled in the area after some good build-up play from Oisin Murphy,  Henry Gaughan converted the resulting penalty. Then on 40 minutes Mark Gilbert put Iorras two in front, with Henry Gaughan providing the final  pass. The visitors had their moments in the opening half from Chris Rowland and Sean McHale both coming close on occasions.

It remained 2-0 at the break. In the second half Castlebar Celtic had the wind advantage, and on 83 minutes Nigel Naughton pulled one back from a free on the edge of the area to leave the final score Iorras Aontaithe 2 Castlebar Celtic 1. Over all, this was a good performance from the home side, in very cold windy conditions.

Unfortunately Iorras Aontaithe (B) were knocked out on penalties, 4-5 in their home clash with Charlestown Athletic in round one of the Touhy cup, after the game ended 3-3.
